Geocaching - The Great Game For Owners of Handheld GPS Devices!
I just discovered this great game of Geocahing. Its a game of treasure hunting, using handheld GPS devices to locate a treasure that is usually called Geocache. The treasure map is to be found on the internet in the form of a listing, where someone who has hidden a Geocache, somewhere in the world, informs about the coordinates of the location where the Geocache is hidden, and even gives a describtion of the surroundings. The location can be in the middle of nowhere, or in a historical place, or anywhere people travel to. Yes, you can find Geocaches in all continents, even in Antarctica. Those who play the game of Geocaching are called Geocachers. Anyone can stash a Geocache were he or she likes, as long as they post info on it on the web where others can find it.
To participate in the game you go online to find a web site with a list of Geocaches. There you search for coordinates of a Geocach in a location of your interest. It can be somewhere near you or in a place you plan to travel to. The coordinates of the Geocache are to be stored in handheld GPS devices that are used to locate the Geocache. The Geocache can be any small thing, usually not wort much, and is usually stored in a water- or weather resistant container, along with a logbook and a pen or a pencil. The Geocachers often exchange the Geocache for another Geocache and follow instructions, given by the Geocacher that stashed the Geocache in the first place. The instructions can be, to send an email with infomration of some kind, for instace facts about the location, pictures of the surroundings, time of discovery, etc.
If you have one of those handheld GPS devices or plan to get one, this is a great way to extend the use of it and make your trip, hiking, or travel abroad more interesting and fun.
If you hvae kids, then Geocaching is a great way to entertain them, by having them participate in choosing a Geocache on the internet and then make a trip to search for it. You can even have them come up with a location, or help you scout for one, to place your own Geocache, and then post the location on the internet to see responces from other Geocachers, that find you Geocache.
